Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer oversees Finance, Operations, Technology, and HR in the US, and works in collaboration with HIP's Mexico entity (HIP-Latinoamerica A.C.) in Finance, Operations and HR.

A key aspect of this role is bringing a strategic perspective that will work along with the CEO and organization to help set the financial strategy and look beyond the numbers. Important to this position, is the ability to communicate up and down the organization to inform and provide direction across USA & Mexico teams.

This position has two direct reports in the US; overseeing a team of five people in operations and finance in the US, while working collaboratively with teams in Mexico. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team this position is responsible for training and mentorship in Finance, Budgeting, HR, and Operations, and is the lead staff on the Finance and Audit Committee, and supports the Investment and Executive Committee for the Board of Directors.

The ideal candidate has a people-centered approach rooted in racial justice and equity when building relationships, and designing organizational solutions, systems, financial strategies, as well as guidance on compliance, policy, and procedures. This position also oversees and leads the Fiscal Sponsorship program.

Position Specifics

This role is approximately 45% finance, 25% operations and administration, 5% tech, 15% human resources, 5% governance, 5% fiscal sponsorship program.

HIP retains a little over 50 employees (including 4 employees under fiscal sponsorship, and 15 employees in MX.) HIP's combined annual budget for 2023 is approximately $19.6m with over $25m in total assets, including approximately $13m in investments. Revenues include grants, donations, membership dues, event sponsorships and tickets, contracts, investments, HIP's crowdfunding platform (HIPGive.org), fiscal sponsorship, and government funding. Expenses include grantmaking, credit card activities, contractor payments, payroll and benefits, and reimbursements.

Given the small size of the finance and operations team this position is hands-on in all areas, from approvals and payment processing, preparing deposits and reconciliations, to onboarding and adding new hires to the payroll system, processing bi weekly payroll in the US, and managing payment platforms. In addition, this position analvzes and recommends annual healthcare benefit strategies in the US, provides quarterly census reporting, completes insurance applications, vets new technology platforms, works with attorneys and vendors, and prepares budgets and reporting.

HIP utilizes QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise version for the US and MX financials, the CFO will reconcile and act as Controller for the US and MX QuickBooks activities. The CFO prepares financial reporting, budgets and budget proposals, prepares the annual audit, US tax returns, 1099/1096 reporting and filing, local business licenses and filings, and supports charitable registrations across the US. The CFO also leads the organization's annual budgeting processes and scenario planning across all teams, supports financial training for staff, mentors direct reports, participates in various Board Committees.

Qualifications

  • Minimum ten (10+ plus years' experience in non-profit accounting and finance to include at least five (5+) plus years in Human Resources; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ten (10+) plus years of financial management experience including strategic and business planning, accounting and financial analysis and reporting.
  • Ten (10+) or more years of leadership experience with success in building and leading high-performance finance and analytics teams through strategic and cultural shifts in organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience with the management or oversight of technology
  • Experience providing annual audit and tax return support and preparation of an organization in similar scale and/or size
  • Comfortable negotiating and reviewing contracts
  • High proficiency with Quickbooks desktop, MS Office, and comfortable learning new technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead remote teams, and build strong internal relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to create policies, and new procedures, while also being flexible and adaptable
  • The ideal candidate will have administrative experience with platforms including but not limited to Monday.com, Slack, Zoom, Google Suites, Salesforce, Smartsimple, and others to help create efficiencies of different systems and processes
  • The ideal candidate will have experience with government reporting, fiscal sponsorships, and grantmaking.
  • Preferred fluency in Spanish and English; HIP is a bilingual organization with a commitment to language justice.
  • Preferred knowledge of California employment law and non-profit code

Compensation

We aim to compensate employees at the 75th percentile of the nonprofit market across all positions, which is determined using research and compensation survey data that is available.

The US starting base salary range for this full-time position is $150,000-$211,000. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills and experience. New staff members typically start between the range minimum and midpoint based on qualifications and experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position requires 7+ hours per day sitting and working from your computer. This is a remote position in the U.S. Some travel will be required. Employees are required to comply with HIP's COVID-19 health and safety measures consistent with CDC guidelines, and federal, state, and local regulations. Employees traveling on behalf of HIP are required to be vaccinated.
